As you’re probably aware at this point, the team at Mighty Flame loves nothing more than providing our blog readers with grilling tips and tricks as well as recipes that are huge on flavor, pack a big punch, and don’t take a culinary mastermind to make. As a matter of fact, many of our recipes don’t even require you to make accurate measurements of your ingredients using measuring cups. Instead, we rely on “a pinch of this” and “eyeball that” in order to ensure that people can simply cook using their instincts.
Sure, some recipes absolutely require their makers to utilize precise measurements in order to get everything to turn out right, but grilling is more about going with your gut in a lot of instances. And, wouldn’t you know it, more often than not, they turn out just fine! Now we’re not saying that one way of cooking is any better or worse than another. All we’re saying is that for the purpose of this blog and the simplicity that’s involved with our recipes, it’s much easier to be general.
Try Something New
For many people, grilling steaks is a familiar experience. In fact, the routine often looks exactly the same. Run out of propane, head to the nearest propane cylinder exchange location, grab your ingredients, and start cooking. Similarly, people have also found that they like to set their grill at this particular temperature and cook their steaks the same way every time. We’re all for finding something that works for you and just sticking with it. After all, it’s kind of like your grandpa used to say–if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Another thing your grandpa always used to say? “Buy it nice or buy it twice.” This is doubly true for the topic of today’s blog (perhaps the alternate title should be something like Use Your Grill Just Like Grandpa Used To). Like we said, we’re all for finding a method of grilling that works for you, but we’re also all for experimenting. What better way to make both of those ideas meet than with a cast iron skillet?
Why a Cast Iron Skillet on the Grill?
Now we know what some of you are thinking–”why would I use a cast iron skillet on my grill when I could be grilling on my grill?” Fair enough question, friends and neighbors, fair enough. To answer your question, using a cast iron skillet on a grill means that you don’t have to heat your home up by using the stovetop or the oven which is always something that people want to avoid in the summer.
It also means that you could grill something on one side of the grill and take advantage of your cast iron skillet on the other side, saving you the numerous trips back and forth to the kitchen. In other words, you could get a good sear on the meat that you’re cooking that only comes from using a grill and then toss your meat into a pan to complete a recipe. Sounds like a win/win to us!
“Okay, But What Can I Actually Make?”
Well…the possibilities are endless! You might even have a favorite recipe that you’ve loved making in a cast iron skillet on the stovetop for years that would be a good candidate for trying outside. Who knows? You might even end up figuring out a great variation on that recipe that takes advantage of all of the benefits of your grill.
Having trouble coming up with a recipe? Why not check out this post from The Kitchn? They have a number of different recipes that are easily adaptable to utilize a grill and cast iron skillet combo. Take their skillet pizza, for example. They also display a wide variety of recipes for everything from rhubarb and brown sugar pork chops to grilled nacho platters to baked egg and chorizo enchiladas to skillet cornbread with bacon and cheddar. Some of that is probably not stuff you ever thought you’d be making on your grill, but now that you have the recipes, you’d be crazy not to give it a try!
