Our Suggestions for a Relaxing Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is a time for remembering those who have died while serving in the military. Their sacrifice has ensured that we are able to enjoy a number of freedoms, so we believe that this is the perfect weekend to make the most of them! Here are a few of the things that we’ll be doing during the long weekend.

Treat Yourself

Any time you get to enjoy a three day weekend, it’s worth treating yourself. These things don’t come around very often for most of us, after all, so now’s the time to take full advantage! How exactly you’ll treat yourself is up to you, but, and we can only really speak for ourselves here, we think it’s the perfect time to throw something special on the grill.

You could take this opportunity to throw a few burgers and brats on the grill, sure, but you could also go a little bit bigger. For example, this might be the perfect opportunity to try out something a little more ambitious. Always dreamt of trying the burger recipe that calls for mango chutney with toasted taleggio cheese crisps? There’s no time like the present, friend! Been looking for an opportunity (and the extra time) to prepare an entire bird on your grill? We certainly can’t think of a better chance to do it than right now.

Of course you don’t have to limit yourself to just grill-related treats. If you watch what you eat throughout the week, this is a great time to literally treat yourself. Grab that new Tonight Dough ice cream sandwich from Ben and Jerry’s. If you’re in need of some new clothes, head to the mall and take advantage of the myriad of sales you will no doubt find. The point, as you may have guessed, is simply to treat yourself.

Spend Time Outside

Now that the weather is starting to warm up a bit, you can take full advantage of the weather and enjoy a bit of time in the great outdoors. Just like the suggestion above, you can go as big or small as you want with this one.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you could plan to take a little road trip to an unfamiliar place to do a bit of exploring. If you’re feeling medium-ambitious, you could visit an area of your town that you’ve never been to. If you’re feeling not-very-ambitious, you could just set up a few chairs on your deck and sit outside while reading a book.

The point of it all is to just get outdoors and enjoy it in a way that makes sense to you. If you feel like doing something rather grand, more power to you; if you’re not feeling particularly adventurous, that’s just fine. Just trust us when we say that the temperature right now is probably pretty decent and if you don’t get outside now, you’ll be regretting it in a few months when it’s so hot out there that you’ll never want to leave the comfort of your air conditioned home.

Take It Easy

Whatever you end up doing, be sure to carve out a bit of time to relax. It seems that all too often, our weekends are filled with running errands and getting chores done. We work 40 hours every week (and, let’s be honest, because in many cases it ends up being more than just the 40 hours) and the average weeknight is filled with making dinner, picking up around the house, and maybe doing a little bit of laundry.

When the weekend finally rolls around, many of us go grocery shopping to pick up the foods that we’ll be eating for the week. Chances are that you also fill up your car and run an errand or two. Before you know it, it’s Sunday evening and you’re trying to wind down with a cold drink and an episode or two of your favorite show. “How did the weekend go by so fast?” It’s a question that we all find ourselves asking at least four times a month. (It is strange that two days at work seems to drag on and on, while two days at home fly by at the speed of light, isn’t it?)

It only makes sense, then, to take full advantage of the fact that you get three days instead of your usual two. If you get everything done on Saturday and Sunday, that still leaves you with a full day on Monday to focus on taking it easy. How exactly will you do that? Well, treating yourself a bit and spending some time in the great outdoors are a few of the ways. Perhaps you’d like to watch a movie or two. Maybe you’d prefer to tackle a DIY project. Whatever the case may be, now is a great time to do whatever it is that brings you rest and relaxation. It’s particularly important in this day and age to carve out some time for yourself, so take advantage of the opportunity this Memorial Day!
