The Open Faced Ham and Egg Sandwich
We know what you’re thinking right off of the bat–this is healthy and it shouldn’t have any bread, right? Well we believe that the phrase “all things in moderation” applies to healthy eating as well and an open faced sandwich means you only use half the amount of bread you usually would. You can opt for bread that’s gluten free or whole grain if you prefer, or go with a regular loaf of white bread. Either way works just fine.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- The aforementioned bread
- Your favorite thinly sliced ham
- Fresh eggs
- Lemon juice
- Tomatoes
- Diced garlic cloves
- Butter
- Salt and pepper
- Cheese (optional)
- Your favorite salad (for the side)
And that’s it! Look over that list of food and you’ll see that it stands out as being full of pretty guilt-free ingredients. One thing that it is not, however, is lacking in the flavor department. Now is a good time to preheat your grill to medium-high.
Let’s Get Started
If you’ve never made a sandwich on the grill before, first of all we just have to say that you’re in for a real treat. You should also know that it’s not as difficult as it might sound–particularly since we’re only working with one slice of bread.
Start by brushing your bread on both sides with a bit of melted butter and sprinkle each side with a bit of salt and pepper. Give one side of your toast a good sear on the grill. You don’t have to fully toast it, but leave it on long enough to make that you get good grill marks. There’s no particular rule of thumb, so just work with your intuition and you’ll be just fine.
Your next step will be to take a freshly beaten egg, toss in your diced garlic, and brush the second side of your bread with this. Re-oil your grill grates, then toss it on the grill egg side down. At this point you can also lay your ham out on the grill and make sure it’s nice and warm. Don’t worry about giving it grill marks (unless you want to, of course) because your goal here is just to heat it through. Everything should be coming together now. You can feel free to add cheese at this stage, if you choose, to the top of your bread. If not, go ahead and plate your bread (now toast) egg side up, top with the ham, then tomato slices, and then add a dash of lemon juice.
Tying it All Together
Serve your open faced sandwich with the salad of your choice and enjoy. It’s as simple as that! You get a massively delicious flavor that’s built using simple ingredients and the pride that always accompanies a successful grilling session.
Perhaps best of all is that you’re getting a good amount of protein from both the ham and the eggs (not to mention some good fats), good carbohydrates from your salad, and best of all is that there’s no sugar in what you made. And as we all know, fat isn’t what makes you fat–sugar is.
Try a Modification
If you’d prefer to make a traditional sandwich, go for it! Adding a slice of cheese before putting on the top layer makes this a huge hit. Alternatively you could add a salad to your sandwich rather than serve it on the side, dressing it with lemon juice, diced garlic, and olive oil.
You could even grill up some chicken and transform this sandwich into a grilled ham, chicken, and cheese beauty. Or, of course, you could forego the bread altogether and create a salad using the rest of the ingredients, serving the egg on top (after hard boiling it, of course).
