With Thanksgiving already right around the corner, we decided to be a bit more proactive about how to use our leftover Thanksgiving turkey than we’ve been in the past. Inevitably your family will end up with extras this holiday season. It’s pretty much a given! But why not plan in advance for how you’ll use the leftovers this year? Trust us when we say that this next meal is so good that you might actually plan to make more than you need just so you can have it each year.

If you’ve been following our blog for any amount of time, you’ve probably seen that we have developed something of a catch phrase around here–“when you buy a propane tank, you unlock a world of culinary possibilities.” This is particularly true when it comes to leftovers. Sometimes the food that remains is tough to know what to do with. Fortunately for you, the team at Mighty Flame is here to help you make the most of the food that might otherwise go to waste!

Try Our Recipe for Grilled Turkey Sandwiches

It’s not quite Monica Gellar’s moist maker sandwich, but you can trust us when we say that you’ll feel just as passionate about our version as Ross did about his sister’s. It does, however, utilize a similar method and it perfectly combines all of your holiday leftovers into one incredible meal. Not only does it allow you to reuse your leftovers, but you’ll actually enjoy the results instead of simply settling for grabbing a plate and reheating the food you already had the day before. It’s a win/win! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Leftover turkey
  • Sourdough bread
  • Leftover mashed potatoes
  • Leftover gravy
  • Leftover dressing or stuffing
  • Swiss cheese

That’s all there is to it. You likely won’t need any additional seasonings because there’s a good chance you seasoned your original food while you were making it. If you do find that your dish needs a little something extra, however, don’t hesitate to season it with anything you prefer. It’s your sandwich after all!

Try a Grill Press

All it takes is a bit of planning and careful maneuvering to get this sandwich to come together. Start by preheating your grill to medium high heat. We’ve found that a cast iron steak weight actually helps this meal to come together perfectly. If you’re not familiar with that particular product, all it is is a weighted item that you can use for cooking. Not only is this item great for keeping a steak pressed against your grill, but it can also be used to cook bacon on the grill without having to deal with the bacon curling up and falling through your grates. Make sure that your weight is also nice and hot because it will help to heat everything through evenly.

How you choose to arrange the ingredients in your sandwich is up to you entirely, but we suggest adding cheese, turkey, and mashed potatoes on one piece and then gravy, dressing or stuffing (we know that this is a point of contention for many families, but either will work great for this sandwich) on the other. Exercise caution when bringing the two pieces together because you don’t want anything to fall out. Or, you know, you could simply quickly toss the pieces together and hope for the best. Either way, your mashed potatoes will help to hold everything together.

Bringing It All Together

Your final step is to butter each side of your sandwich. When you’re all set, toss it on the grill and let it cook for a couple of minutes to allow the butter on the bottom to set in. When you’re ready, flip it over and place the weight on top. You might have to turn your sandwich a few times to get everything to cook through perfectly and ensure that your bread is toasted on each side. If you need to, you can move your sandwich to finish up over indirect heat to ensure that everything inside is heated thoroughly without jeopardizing your bread or causing it to burn.

The end result is an incredible sandwich with beautiful grill marks on both sides and the chances are high that you’ll wish you had more leftovers to use so you can enjoy this sandwich more often.
