In one of our recent blogs (Buy a Propane Tank and Start Cooking the Perfect Burger) we broached the topic of grilling the perfect hamburger. In that blog, we discussed the importance of the perfect bun, the best condiments, and, of course, the burger patty. It’s come to our attention, however, that there’s just so much more to the perfect burger than that.
That’s not to say that that blog isn’t helpful! Think of our previous post as Grilling a Burger 101. Today’s blog is the next step in your continuing education on grilling up the perfect burger.
We always strive to help grillers out there, answering questions about where to buy a propane tank and what types of meals can be made on the grill even by complete beginners. Our goal is to ensure that grillers everywhere realize that with a little bit of thought and planning, the perfect meal is just a quick propane tank exchange away.
In today’s blog, we’ll take a look at a few crucial aspects that should be considered when planning out the perfect burger. Keep reading to learn more!

Having said that, without further ado, let’s get to crafting up the most perfect burger you can imagine.
The Components of a Truly Great Burger
We mentioned in our last blog that the term “perfect burger” is a truly subjective thing. While you might enjoy a toasted sesame seed bun, your neighbor might prefer a whole grain bun. Likewise for condiments. The perfect burger to you might be topped with feta cheese and lettuce, whereas your spouse might think the perfect burger should be topped with cheddar cheese, pickles, tomatoes, and mayo.
The point is that when it comes to the perfect burger, you’re completely allowed to throw every rule you know out the window. The only thing that matters is what the perfect burger looks like to you (or what it looks like to your spouse, whose opinion is also important, of course).
How to Prepare Your Burger Patty
Once you’ve decided what components will be going on your burger, it’s time to focus on the patty. With so much thought and attention on what goes on the burger, sometimes it can be easy to overlook what should be the star of the show–your patty.
One thing is for certain–unless you’re cooking for an entire group of people, you should be making the burger patties yourself. Sure, the frozen pre-shaped burger patties are easy and not too bad, but you can do better than that.
Start by getting the best meat you can. Although the 80% lean ground beef is cheaper, the best burgers are made with leaner beef. At this point, you can feel free to add diced onions, garlic, worcestershire, or anything else you prefer.
You’ll begin by separating your meat into equal portions according to the number of burgers you’d like to make. Roll each portion into a ball and then press down to flatten, ensuring that the thickness is less than 1”. From there, simply make an indentation into your patty in the middle. This will allow your juices to distribute evenly, ensuring that you don’t end up with a burger that’s too big (and uncooked) in the middle.
Next, season your burgers. Whether you use salt and pepper, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, or cayenne pepper is entirely up to you. Choose whatever you prefer.
Your grill should be on high heat. From there, simply throw your burgers on, sear for a few minutes on each side, and then continue to cook to your liking. It’s as simple as that. Stay tuned for more tips and tricks!
